Chongqing, China -- On May 19, 2006, after several months of preparation, Huayan Monastery initiated the "Monastic Experience Camp". Young people who come from different provinces submit application form via Internet, after strict quality check, sixty well-educated young people were selected.
Ven. Daojian, abbot of Huayan Monastery in Chongqing; Ven. Langguang, abbot of Baisha Temple; Ven. Deman, General-Director of Propagation Dharma Department of Huayan Monastery, they all attended the opening ceremony. After brief greeting by abbot, Ven. Deman instructed the Buddhist rituals to campers, and requested them throw the earthly trivial matters away from their mind and focusing on the Chinese traditional etiquette and rigid life in Sangha. Campers said they will cherish this precious opportunity, after experiencing this camp, they will study Chinese traditional culture, appreciating the life with their own mind for their future.
At AM. 5, May 20, 2006, this Camp initiated in the heavy-tone sound of hitting the wooden board. At AM. 5:30, campers began Morning Recitation, had breakfast at Dining Hall, and working outdoors. In the process of working, such as tidy the monastery, carrying sutras, they not only cultivated and salvaged themselves but also others. At AM. 10:30, Ven. Daojian, abbot of Huayan Monastery in Chongqing, instructed Buddhism and Life, every camper learnt a lot from it. After the lunch, a brief noon-break was followed. In the afternoon, the major proceeding was learning the most important sutra in Buddhism which is the Diamond Sutra. Evening Recitation included the Amitabha Sutra etc. After dinner, campers learnt about Insight Meditation, in addition, Ven. Deman introduced some sort of cultivation of Thai Buddhism.
Although campers learnt Buddhism for just a single day, they sensed the immense and mind-coolness of the Buddhism. Campers experienced the Six Principles of Reverent Harmony of Sangha life through walking, lodging, sitting and resting with monastics.
During this period of time, campers improved themselves and enhanced their virtues, develop supra-mundane-mind, practicing Leaving Method, planting the cause of transmundane dharmas, attaining enlightenment of the Dharma, regaining the soul harbor.
At the Goodbye Ceremony, all campers said what they want to say, how do they feel, what did they learn. At the end, Ven. Daojian gave a summary speech; first of all, he congratulated the successful completion of this camp, then he hoped that campers who engaged in this camp could bring their advancement to their daily life and influencing others to live a better life.
